Has anyone ever heard of a Selkie? They're the Scots' answer to the mermaid. Seals that climb up on land and become human.
A selkie can only make contact with one particular human for a short amount of time before they must return to the sea. They are not able to make contact with that human again for seven years, unless the human is to steal their selkie's skin and hide it or burn it.
Male selkies are supposedly very handsome. If you want to try and entice one, you simply go the water's edge and shed seven teardrops.
Now, this all sounds very romantic, but there are those that will point out that the Scotts probably saw a couple fur-clad Finns in a rowboat, or possibly shipwrecked Spaniards with wet jet-black hair that looked like a seal.
But I choose to believe :) I don't think I'll be seeing any Selkies in the middle of North Carolina, although as you can see in a previous post, that shark made it from the coast all the way to my street! Pesky shark. Looking for a punch in the nose.

  1. You can rest assured that Mark Ramsay has not only heard of them, he probably counts a few as his personal friends. And you can also rest assured that they do, indeed, live everywhere there is water, both here and in the astral world. You just have to believe and understand what you are looking at in order to see them, lassie. Keep looking, you'll see them.
